Most people don’t necessarily know the guy behind the camera, especially when the surfer being filmed is as talented and radical Nick Rozsa. So we caught up with Salty Beard’s lead lensman, Chris Papaleo to find out bit about his relationship with Nick and how they got started together.
How did you and Nick get started working together?
Nick and I got started shooting together about three years ago when we were roommates in Ventura and he needed footage from home for a part in a Reef movie. I shot with Nick for about a year in 2009 but it was more of just a hobby. After that I didn’t shoot for about two years. We both moved out of Ventura. Nick went to Carlsbad and I moved back to the Valley where I grew up.
What do you feel makes you two so good as a team?
I think what makes Nick and I such a good team is we don’t have to sensor what we are thinking when we have a conversation, regardless of what the topic is. We both have a bizzare sense of humor and weird interest in not so average things. Also, we are closet video game addicts.
For you, what is most impressive about Nick?
Mostly his life outside of the ocean and how he deals with it. He’s not your average surfer kid growing up in the rich part of Santa Barbera or Hawaii, where mommy and daddy pay for everything and you always have money to do whatever you want. Everything Nick has, he earned. Now, he’s raising a kid and takes care of his entire family on a small budget. I could never deal with the amount stress he does on a daily bases. I’d lose it.
Future for you and Nick?
Basically just trying to collect footage whenever Nick is home and I’m not working in the Valley. It would be neat to make a feature film one day but I’m psyched just making short web clips that get people amped to go for a surf.
